Why should I study catering?
This is a vocational single award GCSE taught at Bramcote College. It is aimed at students of all ability levels who enjoy demonstrating creative and practical skills, working both on their own and in teams. Tasks will involve completing research, solving problems and planning and organising practical tasks relevant to the catering industry. Ingredients will need to be regularly provided.

The course consists of two units:

Unit 1: Catering skills related to food preparation and service (60%)

Task 1 = 15 hours, Task 2 = 30 hours.

This will involve planning and carrying out 2 extended practical assessed projects. Both tasks involve research and practical work enabling you to learn new skills and demonstrate your ability to make and present high quality dishes.

Unit 2 Catering, food and the consumer (40%) Written paper

This unit is assessed through an examination which tests a range of areas of study. The examination will be taken at the end of year 11.

Both of these units concentrate on the food preparation and service aspect of the catering industry:

  • The industry – food and drink
  • Job roles, employment opportunities and relevant training
  • Health, safety and hygiene
  • Food preparation, cooking and presentation
  • Nutrition and menu planning
  • Costing and portion control
  • Specialist equipment
  • Communication and record keeping
  • Environmental considerations

The single award GCSE for Hospitality can be taken as an option to complement Catering to give a double award in Hospitality and Catering.
